Introduction

I、Department History The school was founded in March of 1966. It was formerly known as Tajen Pharmacy Institute. At the beginning of its establishment, it took the pharmacy as a principal axis for the development of the college. In August of 1999, it was reformed as Tajen Institute of Technology, and was promoted as Tajen University in August of 2005. Currently, the whole school has been expanded to 4 academies, 21 academic departments / bachelor programs, 6 master programs / research institutes and 1 general education center; it takes “Improve the quality of human life” as its core educational essence, supported by three principal axes of “Healthy promotion”, “Environmental conservation” and “Caring service”, and adheres to the educational philosophy of “Study Diligently; Embody Virtues” in the development to provide an educational environment with four ambitions in health, management, leisure and social welfare. While the Recreation & Sport Management Department was established on the basis of upholding the four major educational objectives of the school. This department was prepared in February of 2000 after approved by the Ministry of Education, and began to recruit new students in August of 2000. In the first year of its establishment, it was approved and allowed to recruit 1 day program four-year class and 1 two-year class; in August of 2001, set up the continuing education and the further education college. For the continuing education and the further education college, the two-year technical school system was added in the academic year of 2007. The two-year technical school system was added for the day program in the academic year of 2008. But the two-year technical school systems for both the day program and continuing education stopped recruiting in the academic year of 2009. The two-year technical school system for the further education college also planned to stop recruiting in the academic year of 2017. The master program educational system was established in August of 2004 after the approval by the Ministry of Education. It was formerly known as the “Research Institute for Recreation & Health Management”. At the beginning of its establishment, it had many departments in one institute, so this research institute was established by combining with four departments, including Recreation & Sport Management Department, Department of Hospitality Management, Department of Health Business Management and Department of Tourism Management. The curriculum for the master program of this department was divided into three modules in the academic year of 2012, including recreation & sport management, tourism & hospitality management, and health management; in the academic year of 2014, it was adjusted as three courses of recreation & sport management, tourism & hospitality management, and health management; in the first year, it recruited 15 graduate students, and in the following year, it recruited 20 graduate students respectively. Then, the master program of this department set up the on-the-job school system in the academic year of 2007, and was renamed as “Research Institute for Recreation Business Management” by making a proposal to the Ministry of Education in the academic year of 2008; the on-the-job technical class recruited 22 graduate students in the academic year of 2009. Finally, the master program of this department was again renamed as “Recreation Business Management Master Program of Recreation & Sport Management Department” by making a proposal to the Ministry of Education in the academic year of 2015, formally completing the course of many departments integrated in one. In the academic year of 2016, various school systems of this department have 2 classes of general students for the master program, 2 classes of on-the-job technical students for the master program, 9 classes of four-year day program students, 4 classes of four-year evening program students, 2 classes of two-year students for the evening program and 2 classes of two-year students for the evening program college. There are 21 classes in total. For the full-time teachers, there are 2 professors, 12 associate professors, 3 assistant professors, and 2 lecturers with 19 in total.

IIDevelopment Characteristics The Department is committed to combining with the school objectives and educational philosophy, meeting the trend of the times and establishing a department with unique characteristics. The characteristics of the department are as follows:

(I) To embody the local learning, local internship and local employment This school is located in Pingtung region, south of the national territory. It has fairly rich tropical natural landscapes and complete leisure & recreation resources. Especially in Pingtung County, there are many leisure & recreation areas, such as Kenting National Park, Tapeng Bay National Scenic Area, Banloan Leisure Agricultural Area along the mountains, etc. The market demands of its leisure industry in the adjacent areas are very abundant. Therefore, this department takes the “local employment” as its characteristic, and actively promotes students to participate in the license study, local industries visit and internship to achieve the characteristic of “local employment” for the department. The actual promotion approaches include establishing a strategic alliance of industry-academy cooperation with the local enterprises, constructing off-campus practice bases in Kaohsiung and Pingtung region, encouraging students to participate in community care services, building good local relations, etc. In recent years, most students in Kaohsiung and Pingtung region can realize the internship and employment in the adjacent areas with fruitful achievements.

(II) To Link to the waters specialty Pingtung City is surrounded on three sides by sea with abundant marine resources and ecological landscapes. Within the region, Kenting National Park and Tapeng Bay National Scenic Area are the leisure sports venues for internationally known waters; furthermore, Taiwan is a standard island nation, and rich and diverse aquatic activities naturally become the island’s main development characteristics. Based on this external advantage and opportunity, this department sets up the “waters specialty” as a unique characteristic of the department. The actual promotion approaches include conducting a strategic alliance in combination with the dealers for waters leisure activities, encouraging students to obtain water-related certificates such as swimming, water motorcycle, diving, etc, setting the first aid certificate as the graduation threshold for students, cooperating with the dealers of the waters leisure industries in conducting the industry-academy cooperation, encouraging and assisting the students interested in water leisure activities to practice in the related industries, etc. At present, this department has already carried out the industry-academy cooperation with the sailboat practitioners of Tapeng Bay National Scenic Area and the surfing practitioners of Kenting National Park, has established the off-campus practice bases and actively promoted the characteristic development of the waters specialty. It takes the seamless integration of students in internship and employment as its major development goal.

(III) To practice the old-age care The basic quality of this school starts from the orange care with the social and humanistic care as its starting point. Along with the current situation of Taiwan stepping into the aging society, this department will set the “old-age care” as one of the department’s development characteristics to seek cooperation with government agencies and non-government institutions, actively promote the elderly leisure activities and the development of physical fitness, and plan the senior leisure activities by combining the educational curriculum for the elder. The actual promotion approaches include designing the visiting activities related to the senior leisure industry, signing a strategic alliance with the senior leisure industry, teachers leading the students to the old-age care points in the district to carry out the services, constructing the scenario simulation classroom for the elder’s physical fitness, encouraging students to obtain senior leisure-related licenses, and carrying out various volunteer services combined with the basic quality of the school to make the development characteristic of old-age care integrate into the curricula and activities of the department, and achieve the goal of “be attentive from time to time and caring in all respects”.

IIIEducational Objectives [Recreation & Sport Management Department] The formulation of the educational objectives for this department needs to consider the social development trends & needs, student sources and traits, school and college educational objectives, along with the leisure policies of the government and non-governmental organizations. The objectives will be formulated after passing the curriculum development committee and department affair conference. The department has two educational objectives respectively shown in the following:

(I) Cultivate the grass-roots professional service talents for the recreation service industry.

(II) Cultivate the grass-roots professional service talents for the sport service industry. [Recreation Business Management Master Program] The formulation of the educational objectives for the master program of this department needs to be in coordination with the leisure industry development trends, the needs from schools at all levels in the fields of teacher training and leisure sports, social & economic fluctuations, combined with the school and college educational objectives, and also consider the government’s policy trends for the leisure sports, tourism & hospitality, and health management. The objectives will be formulated after passing the research institute affair committee and department affair conference. The master program of this department has three educational objectives respectively shown in the following: (I) Cultivate the mid-level management talents related to the recreation and sport industry. (II) Cultivate the mid-level management talents related to the tourism and hospitality industry. (III) Cultivate the mid-level management talents related to the recreation and health industry.
